Counting:

When the instructor counts "ichi, ni, san, chi" (1, 2, 3, 4) ...

The student responds "go, roku, sichi, hachi" (5, 6, 7, 8).

Commands:

Rei = bow           Yoi = Prepare Kamae = go to open stance

Oss(u) = I understand / will try my hardest

Basic Movements:

Down block = gedan barai uke           Upper block = age uke

Side block = yoko uke           Inside block = uchi uke

Knife hand block = shuto uke

Front kick = mai geri           Roundhouse kick = mawashi geri

Side kick = yoko geri           Back kick = ushiro geri

Closed stance = musubi dachi           Open (ready) stance = heiko dachi

Front stance = zenkutsu dachi           Half-front stance = han zenkutsu dachi

Side stance = shiko dachi           Cat stance = neko ashi dachi

Upper (face) level = age           Middle (stomach) level = chudan

Lower (groin) level = gedan 

 

Kata (Forms):

...are imaginary fights against imaginary opponents in several directions. These are pre-set movements, in a specific order. The student learns these forms in order of difficulty, thereby building the student's proficiency in execution of movement, stances, blocks, punches, and kicks.

Kata #1: Kihon (basic) kata (form): required for Orange Belt

Utilizes only zenkutsu dachi (front stance), side block (yoko uke), and middle (chudan) punch (tsuki).

It is performed in an "I" formation.

Turn left, w/ left foot forward, perform left hand side (yoko uke) block.

Step in w/ right leg and perform middle punch right hand (chudan tsuki).

180 deg turn, right leg steps back, body turns to opposite direction and student now has right leg forward, performing side block w/ right hand.

Steps in w/ left leg, left hand punches mid-section level.

Now student turns 1/4 turn (90 deg) moving left leg, blocking left arm yoko uke.

Steps in right leg / right arm mid level punch,

Steps in left leg / left arm mid level punch,

Steps in right leg / right arm mid level punch w/ KIAI !!!

Turning to right side, but by using rear leg must turn 3/4's turn (270 deg) using left leg movement, left arm block yoko uke (side block).

Step in right leg / right arm punch mid level.

180 deg turn, right leg only moves back and student pivots, right left forward, left arm blocking yoko (side) uke (block).

Step in mid level punch w/ right hand.

Now 180 deg turn again, right leg moves back and student pivots w/ right arm blocking yoko (side block) uke.

Step in punch w/ left leg and right arm middle punch.

Kata basic movements are done.

Student returns left foot so that body is now facing original starting direction, in heiko dachi stance (feet shoulder width, parallel feet)

Right leg comes in from heiko dachi stance to closed (musubi dachi) stance w/ yoi.

Hands side, bow. Kata is ended.

Kata #2: Kihon (basic) kata (form) ichi (one): Required for Orange Belt

Utilizes only front stance (zenkutsu dachi), down block (gedan barai uke), and middle punch (chudan tsuki).

Performed same as above for kata #1 except that the block is a down block gedan barai uke.

Same "I" formation.

Kata #3: Kihon (basic) kata (form) ni (two): Required for Orange Belt

Utilizes only full front stance (zenkutsu dachi), upper block (age uke), and middle punch (chudan tsuki).

Performed same as above for kata #1 except that the block is an upper block (age uke).

Same "I" formation.

Kata #4: Kihon (basic) kata (form) san (three): Required for Orange Belt
